Engagement Rings vs Wedding Rings: What's the Difference?

If you’re new to the world of engagement rings and wedding bands, you might be wondering, “What the heck is the difference?”
The terms “engagement ring” and “wedding ring” are sometimes used interchangeably but they are two very different things. To save you time and make your life easier, we’ve broken down the differences for you.
What is an Engagement Ring?
Just as the name implies, an engagement ring is the ring you present when proposing to your significant other. Traditionally, it’s also the only ring that is worn before the wedding day.
While there are no hard rules as to what can or cannot be an engagement ring, most include a center diamond.
What is a Wedding Ring?
It can be confusing when you first hear that you need to buy not one but two rings before your wedding day. But the wedding ring (or band) is the ring that officially shows that you’re married!
Wedding rings are worn by both men and women. Women typically wear their wedding bands next to their engagement rings.
Generally speaking, wedding rings are less extravagant (and therefore less expensive) than engagement rings. They sometimes include diamonds and other gemstones.
Women usually choose a wedding band that complements their engagement ring well since both are worn together after the wedding day.
What Do Brides Wear Down the Aisle?
On their wedding day, brides typically wear their engagement rings down the aisle. During the ceremony, you’ll exchange your wedding rings and wear them from that point forward.
After the wedding day, most women continue to wear both their engagement rings and wedding bands -- although some prefer to wear their wedding rings alone.
