How to Figure Out Your Ring Size at Home

How to Figure Out Your Ring Size at Home

Buying a ring or engagement ring requires one important measurement — your ring size. If you know your ring size, you can determine the exact size of your purchase. If you’re not sure of the perfect fit, there are a few things you can do at home to figure out the right size before you go shopping.

How to Know Your Ring Size Without Talking to an Expert

All you need is a pen, piece of thin paper and a ruler to measure your ring size. Cut a length of narrow paper and wrap it carefully around the finger you will wear the ring on. The paper should not be too tight or loose. Then make a small mark on the paper using the pen at the exact spot where the paper starts to overlap. Use the ruler to measure the length of the paper it takes to wrap around your finger. You can also try a piece of string or even dental floss if you find the paper difficult to work with.

Once you have your measurement in millimeters (mm), compare it to standard ring sizes.

  • 16.5 mm string is a size six
  • 16.9 mm string is a 6.5
  • 17.3 mm string is a seven

In ring sizes, every 4 mm you increase in size, you go up a half a size.

When deciding which size is closest, keep in mind that your ring also has to fit over your knuckles. It can be useful to cut a piece of paper to the right size and seal it closed with tape. See if it will fit over your knuckles. If not, you may need a larger size.

Another option is to buy a ring measurement tool online. To use this tool, simply slide your fingers into the openings. Each opening is clearly identified with the ring size, so the one with the best fit is your size. This is likely the easiest method, but it does mean spending a few dollars on the ring measurement tool and waiting for it to ship. If you’re buying online and aren’t completely sure of your ring size, make sure you buy an item you can resize or exchange.
