If you are embarking on a trip soon, you may be wondering what you should do with your jewelry? Should you leave it all behind or can it accompany you on your travels? And, if you do choose to bring it, how do you keep it safe?
Traveling with jewelry takes some planning. You need to know what you will bring, how you will secure what you leave behind, how to pack jewelry safely, and how to keep it safe when you’re wearing it. Here are some of our tips for traveling with jewelry safely.
Decide What Jewelry to Bring on Your Trip
First, you will need to decide what jewelry to bring with you on your trip. This decision is largely personal, but it also depends on what you plan to do during your vacation. If you are going to be putting your feet up on a beach most of the time, you may not choose to bring any jewelry. However, if you’re planning to dress up and go out to dinner, you may want to bring some of your fine jewelry with you.
Secure the Jewelry You Leave Behind
After you decide what to bring with you on your trip, you need to decide how you will secure the jewelry you are leaving at home. You might want to consider renting out a safe deposit box, or you can store your jewelry in an at-home safe. If you don’t have a safe, at least store your jewelry in a less-than-obvious space in your home. That way, in the unfortunate event that your home is broken into, thieves will have a harder time finding your valuables.
Pack Your Jewelry Safely
Next, you need to safely pack up your jewelry. You can’t throw your jewelry together in a bag or you risk having your items scratch each other. It’s best to purchase something specifically made for this purpose, such as a roll-up jewelry pouch or a travel jewelry box. The small, soft pouches we give out at Koser Jewelers are also excellent for traveling with jewelry.
Airports and Jewelry Security
If you’re flying, you should consider wearing your most precious items through the airport. If you decide to pack them, keep them in your carry-on bag, which is kept with you at all times. Never place your jewelry checked luggage.
Be Smart About Where You Wear Your Jewelry While Traveling
Once you arrive at your destination, you will still have to choose when and where to sport your favorite fine jewelry. You may want to think twice about wearing your jewelry for activities where it could be easily lost, damaged, or stolen. For example, jewelry is commonly lost in the ocean, so it’s best not to wear it when going to the beach.
Secure Your Jewelry in Your Room
If you decide to leave some of your jewelry in your room while away, be sure to secure it well. You can also ask the staff at your resort or hotel if they can store your jewelry in their safe while you’re out. No matter what you do, never leave your jewelry sitting out.
Insure Your Jewelry
Lastly, it’s always best to have your jewelry insured, whether you travel with it or not. Many insurance companies require appraisals before insuring jewelry, so be sure to check ahead of time. At Koser Jewelers, we are offer jewelry appraisals on many items, including jewelry not purchased at our store. If you have questions regarding appraisals, feel free to give us a call at 717-653-4941.
