How to Untangle A Knotted Necklace

How to Untangle A Knotted Necklace

Anyone who regularly wears a necklace has probably dealt with a knotted chain at least once or twice. We have customers come to see us all the time asking us to untangle knots for them. While we’re happy to help, we know that not everyone wants to make a trip to the jewelry store just to bring in a knotted chain.

Fortunately, the untangling process is actually relatively simple and can easily be done at home! Here are some tips to help you untangle your necklaces at home.

Start on a Flat Surface

When untangling a chain, it’s best to work on a flat surface. You might be tempted to bring the knot close to your eyes to see it better, but holding the chain up is asking for problems. Gravity works against you, and you can easily drop your chain just as you make some progress on it. Instead, start the process on a flat surface like your kitchen table.

Use a Pin to Work the Knot Loose

The best tool you can use on a knotted chain is a thin, straight pin. You can also use an open safety pin. Start with the pin in the middle of the knot and see if you can loosen it up. As the knot loosens, you should be able to see how it is tangled, allowing you to work the knot out.

As you work on it, be sure to be gentle with your chain. If you pull too hard, you run the risk of breaking it, especially if it is relatively thin. This risk is why it’s important to work on the chain little by little, rather than using one long pull of the pin.

What To Do if the Knot Won’t Get Loose

If you still can’t get the knot loose, try dabbing some baby oil on the chain with a cotton swab. The oil should help the knot loosen up and allow you to work it out with the pin.

However, be aware that baby oil is not good for your chain, so you will need to clean it immediately after finishing this process. Use your jewelry cleaner or warm soapy water to safely remove the baby oil from the metal.
