Signs that Your Engagement Ring Needs to be Resized

Signs that Your Engagement Ring Needs to be Resized

After a proposal, it is not uncommon for the engagement ring to need resizing. But if you haven’t worn many rings before, you may not know how a ring is supposed to fit. Here are some of the telltale signs that your engagement ring needs to be resized.

The ring comes off with almost no effort

We find that most brides-to-be (and grooms-to-be) think their rings are too small when they are actually a perfect fit. For most people, your ring will slip on your finger with a small amount of effort, but it should take some more work to remove it. If your ring comes off with almost no effort, it’s probably too big. If you don’t have to work at all to get it off, you risk losing it during everyday activities, such as washing your hands.

It spins constantly

Engagements rings will spin from time to time, but they shouldn’t turn constantly. Spinning rings are more likely to be damaged -- not to mention, drive you crazy! To reduce the spinning, we recommend sizing your ring as small as you comfortably can, especially if you don’t plan on taking it off often. Even if your ring fits perfectly, it will still spin sometimes, especially during the cold winter months.

It squeezes your finger

On the other hand, if your ring is squeezing your finger and feels uncomfortable most of the time, it’s probably too small. There may be times that your ring feels tight at the base of your finger, especially during the summertime or when you’re particularly swollen. Most of the time, however, when you’re at a normal temperature, your ring should not squeeze your finger.

A jeweler tells you it should be resized

If a professional jeweler tells you that your ring should be resized, most likely, they’re right. You may be skeptical, but you can trust their expert opinion. They are trained to do this! Plus, if they’re wrong, they should resize your ring at no charge.

At Koser, we find that many customers think their rings should be bigger than we recommend. Men, in particular, tend to wear their rings too big. Unfortunately, all too often, we hear about newlyweds losing their rings on their honeymoons, especially when they didn’t have their fingers sized by a professional (or didn’t listen to the professional’s advice).

Finding the proper size for a ring isn’t as simple as you might think. When we measure your finger to recommend a size, we take several factors into account, including:

  • the size and shape of your finger
  • the shape of the ring
  • the width of the ring
  • how often you will be wearing the ring

Taking all of these factors into account, we will suggest a size, but you are always the one who will get decide what size your ring is. Just keep in mind that it’s usually best to follow our recommendations to reduce your chances of losing your ring (and to avoid paying a second resizing fee).
