What is Fine Jewelry? What is Fashion & Costume Jewelry?

You’ve probably heard the terms “fine jewelry” and “fashion jewelry” before, but do you know the difference? After all, fine jewelry is part of “fashion,” isn’t it? Here’s a simple guide to the differences between these two types of jewelry (and why fine jewelry wins the contest every time)!

What is Fine Jewelry?

The term “fine jewelry” is used for any jewelry that is made from precious metals such as gold, silver, or platinum. Fine jewelry typically uses genuine gemstones like diamonds, sapphires, rubies, or emerald. Fine jewelry is durable and made to last. As a result, fine jewelry can be worn every day.

What is Fashion Jewelry?

Contrastly, “fashion jewelry” refers to any jewelry that is not made from precious metals. Fashion jewelry is sometimes called “costume jewelry,” and is often made from base metals, such as brass, copper, or aluminum. Fashion jewelry can also be made with textiles or leather, or base metals that are plated with precious metals. If a piece of fashion jewelry is made with a gemstone, it is almost always simulated, which means the “gemstone” might be plastic, glass, or crystal (among others).

The Benefits of Fine Jewelry vs Fashion Jewelry

When you compare fine jewelry and fashion jewelry side by side, there’s no question which one is the better choice. Fine jewelry is created to last for a lifetime and can even be passed down for generations. When fine jewelry breaks, it can usually be repaired by a trained goldsmith. Rings made of precious metals such as gold, platinum, or silver can also be resized over time. Rings made from non-precious metals cannot be resized.

Another benefit of fine jewelry is that it retains value in the future. Fine jewelry can become family heirlooms that are passed down for generations. We regularly see pieces of jewelry that belonged to our customers' grandmothers or great grandmothers! Fashion jewelry has no resale value and is less likely to become a family heirloom, although it does happen.

Fashion Jewelry - The Pros and Cons

Fashion jewelry is made for a completely separate purpose than fine jewerly is - it's created to be pretty but inexpensive. For this reason, fashion jewelry does not use precious metals.

The metals used in fashion jewelry cannot withstand heat, so when these items break, they cannot be fixed. Unfortunately, most fashion jewelry breaks quickly. Fashion jewelry can also bend or tarnish easily. At that point, it needs to be replaced since it cannot be repaired.

Most women have jewelry collections made up of both fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. The main draw of fashion jewelry is the low-price tag.

The good news is that fine jewelry doesn't necessarily equal high-priced. If you are shopping for a gift or a casual occasion and would prefer not to spend much, you can often find a beautiful piece of silver jewelry at a very reasonable price.

For example, at Koser Jewelers, we offer a line by Ania Haie that has prices starting around $30 that will easily outlast any piece of fashion jewelry. We choose not to carry fashion jewelry in our store because we cannot service it or take care of it after you purchase it. We are not interested in making quick sales, but rather, helping you to find items that will create special moments and last a lifetime.

There's a time and place for fashion jewelry. But in the long run, fine jewelry is worth the investment! Purchasing quality pieces of fine jewelry will ensure you build a collection that's valuable in the future and can be passed down for generations to come.
