Why It's Important to Have Your Jewelry Inspected

Have you ever noticed how jewelry stores always talk about coming back every six months to have your jewelry inspected? This isn’t just a ploy to get you back in the store (although we love to see you!) — inspections are a critical part of jewelry’s long-term care.
Here is an overview of jewelry inspections, including why they are essential and what you can expect when you have your pieces inspected.
Why You Should Have Your Jewelry Inspected Regularly
Jewelry is exposed to a lot of wear and tear, so it’s important to have it regularly inspected by a professional jeweler. Even it looks good to you, there can be problems that you aren’t aware of. Our professionals use magnification to get a close-up look and ensure they don’t miss anything. Inspections can prevent you from causing further damage, including the loss of diamonds or gemstones.
How Often Should You Get Your Jewelry Inspected
If you wear a particular piece every day, have it checked regularly. We recommend that you bring your jewelry to be inspected about once every six months. If there are some pieces in your collection that you only wear occasionally, one inspection per year may be enough.
You should also bring in your jewelry whenever it takes an unexpected hit. This is one of those times that it’s better to be safe than sorry. Bring it in (even if everything looks OK to you) because you may have loose stones or damaged prongs that need to be addressed.
What to Expect When You Get Your Jewelry Inspected
When you bring your jewelry to be inspected at Koser, we will take a few minutes to examine it under magnification. We check to see that all of the prongs are in good shape and that all diamonds and gemstones are secure within their settings. We would also look for any other possible issues, such as chips, cracks, or weak spots.
If our jewelers recommend repairs or restorations, we will go over those with you in detail. We will also give you an estimate of the cost and anything else you need to know.
If your jewelry is good to go, we will give it a nice clean and polish to shine it up before returning it to you. The process generally only takes a few minutes and is done free of charge.
Inspections Aren’t a Guarantee
Remember that inspections do not guarantee that your jewelry will never need to be restored or repaired. All jewelry requires some regular maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape.
Unfortunately, even if we give your jewelry a glowing report, you might still need repairs in the near future. For example, your ring could be in perfect shape while you’re having it checked, and it could be damaged the next day. Don’t let this deter you from wearing your jewelry, though, because most damages can be easily repaired.
Wear it, enjoy it, and don’t worry about the rest — we’ll take care of it!
